Language-oriented roles like these are susceptible to automation, Madgavkar said. ![]() Like media roles, jobs in the legal industry such as paralegals and legal assistants are responsible for consuming large amounts of information, synthesizing what they learned, then making it digestible through a legal brief or opinion. That's because the number of jobs in legal services is relatively small and have already been highly exposed to AI automation before the advent of new AI tools, Manav Raj, an author of the Goldman study, told Insider. Generative AI may most likely affect legal workers in the US, a recent Goldman Sachs report found. "There's a ton of human judgment that goes into each of these occupations," she said.ĪI can replicate some of the work that paralegals and legal assistants do, though they aren't entirely replaceable, experts say. Tech news site CNET used an AI tool similar to ChatGPT to write dozens of articles - though the publisher has had to issue a number of corrections - and BuzzFeed has used tech from the ChatGPT maker to generate new forms of content like quizzes and travel guides.īut Madgavkar said that the majority of work done by content creators is not automatable. Tech companies like ChatGPT maker's OpenAI are already considering replacing software engineers with AI. "What took a team of software developers might only take some of them," he added. ![]() ![]() In fact, advanced technologies like ChatGPT could produce code faster than humans, which means that work can be completed with fewer employees, Mark Muro, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute who has researched AI's impact on the American workforce, told Insider. Tech jobs such as software developers, web developers, computer programmers, coders, and data scientists are "pretty amenable" to AI technologies "displacing more of their work," Madgavkar said. If I happen upon a solution there, I will come back and update this thread.Īnyway, I thought it would be valuable to call out some items I’ve seen after going through this process. As for the reverse…applying those changes to the computer prior to the first launch (after restoring the checkpoint)…that is still on the to-do list. I believe I’ve chased them all down, but undoing those changes individually does not result in the Steam overlay being broken again. I have tried using a “whatchanged” utility, to capture changes to files/registry in the VM after Terraria has been launched once. Since the Steam overlay DOES work on the subsequent launches of the game, we know that “something” is being changed after the first launch…but that “something” has been elusive to me. The Steam overlay does not work on the first launch of the game, ever. When I revert to the checkpoint, the same thing happens. Now, I can run Terraria in the virtual machine, and the Steam overlay does not work during the first launch of the game, but does work on subsequent launches. Then, I took a checkpoint of the VM (Hyper-V’s term for a snapshot), so that I could keep going back to this state. The latter is included with the game, and I installed it manually so that Steam wouldn’t prompt to install it when running Terraria for the first time. I installed Steam, Terraria, and the Microsoft XNA Framework Redistributable 4.0. I reproduced this on three different Windows computers.Īfter seeing this pattern, I provisioned a new Windows 11 22H2 virtual machine inside of Hyper-V on my laptop. But on subsequent launches, the Steam overlay worked fine. After installing the game through Steam, on a local computer which has never had the game installed previously…the Steam overlay did not work during the first launch of the game. While troubleshooting the Steam overlay issue with this game, I noticed a pattern. As such, I think the information I’m writing here can be helpful in chasing it down on those systems as well. While I’m trying to find a way the issue can be prevented on the GFN service, there is some overlap with the issue on local systems. There have been many posts (and various “solutions”) over the years, about the Steam overlay not working in Terraria for people using local computers. The information below details how I came to this conclusion. What I don’t know, is how to stop it from happening on the “first” launch. ![]() Every gaming session is essentially being run on a new computer. I believe this to be the reason the issue persists on the GFN service, because gaming sessions there use ephemeral virtual machines. ![]() The TL DR is that one “root cause” of this issue, is related to the Windows “application compatibility” functionality in the OS…when the game is launched for the first time. The specific details are in this community forum post, Terraria Is Extremely Broken [I would really like to get to the bottom of the “why” this is happening, so that it can potentially be fixed. As of this writing, the Steam overlay is not functional when playing Terraria on NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW (GFN) cloud gaming service. ![]() Still, while external SSDs are cheaper than they were a few years ago (see the best we've tested at the preceding link), they're far from a complete replacement for spinning drives. Because there is no spinning platter or moving magnetic head, if you bump the SSD while you're accessing its data, there is no risk that your files will become corrupted and unreadable. Not only is it faster to read and write data stored in flash cells, but it's also safer. Practically speaking, this means you can move gigabytes of data (say, a 4GB feature-length film, or a year's worth of family photos) to an external SSD in seconds rather than the minutes it would take with an external spinning drive. External SSDs offer at least twice that speed and now, often much more, with typical results on our benchmark tests in excess of 400MBps. Just how much faster is it to access data stored in flash cells? Typical read and write speeds for consumer drives with spinning platters are in the 100MBps to 200MBps range, depending on platter densities and whether they spin at 5,400rpm (more common) or 7,200rpm (less common). Unlike a conventional disk-based hard drive, which stores data on a spinning platter or platters accessed by a moving magnetic head, an SSD uses a collection of flash cells-similar to the ones that make up a computer's RAM-to save data. Solid-state drives (SSDs) have fewer moving parts than traditional hard drives, and they offer the speediest access to your data. Hard drives may get you more capacity for your dollar by far, but first you need to consider a major difference in external storage these days: the hard drive versus the SSD. Our article concludes with a detailed spec breakout of our top choices. Read on for our labs-tested favorites, followed by the buying basics you should know when buying an external drive. This guide will help you make sense of these and many more questions that arise while you're shopping for an external hard drive.įirst off: We've outlined below our top picks among external hard drives we've tested. Other factors include the physical size of the drive (is it designed to be carted around, or to sit on your desk?), how rugged it is, the interface it uses to connect to your PC, and even what colors it comes in. The drive capacity is the most important factor to consider, and it can increase or decrease the cost dramatically depending on your needs. WATCH | Why scientists and chefs are ditching their gas stoves - and touting this alternativeĭuration 3:09 Gas stoves generate dangerous levels of indoor air pollution and leak climate-changing methane. The combined health and climate impacts of stoves are also starting to catch the attention of celebrity chefs, such as John Horne, Angus An and John Kung, who have become evangelists for electric induction stoves in a field where gas stoves were once considered an essential tool for anyone serious about cooking. "I am reluctant to throw away a perfectly good electric oven," he said. His gas stove has an electric oven, but it doesn't seem possible to swap out just the burners. What he found pushed him to work on electrifying his home too. Rob Jackson, professor of environmental sciences at Stanford University, co-authored a recent study that found gas stoves leak unexpectedly high levels of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, even when they're off - and they generate significant levels of indoor air pollution. "After that, as soon as it was feasible, I switched from a gas stove to induction," she said. Kahan immediately applied the new knowledge to her own life. University of Saskatchewan researcher Tara Kahan, right, stands beside the instruments she used to measure indoor air pollution from cooking and cleaning. "All of the researchers were pretty horrified." "It really took a long time to go away," said Kahan, associate professor and Canada Research Chair in Environmental Analytical Chemistry. Kahan's measurements found that not only did levels of nitrogen oxide pollutants sometimes exceed Health Canada guidelines for a one-hour exposure, but the pollutants often lingered for a couple of hours. ![]() For example, a 2013 meta-analysis of 41 studies found that children living in a home that used gas for cooking had a 42 per cent increased risk of having asthma. When Tara Kahan took pollution readings inside homes after cooking with a gas stove in 20, the University of Saskatchewan chemist and her colleagues were surprised by both how high the levels of nitrogen oxides were and how long they lasted.Įxposure to nitrogen oxides, produced when gas is burned, is linked to respiratory problems such as asthma and decreased lung function, especially in children. After taking measurements, many of these researchers are switching to electric stoves - and warning the public about the health risks of cooking with gas. ![]() Gas stoves produce more indoor air pollutants than even some scientists expect. ![]() Remember that you will return home celebrated as heroes, whether you’re dead or alive. This could definitely change as time goes on given the in-progress nature of the build though.įootstep detection audio is good, perhaps even a bit overdone, while the rest of the game felt "muffled" by comparison. Things were well-optimized however, and I didn't run into any noticeable framerate drops in the dozen or so matches I played. The visuals and audio were also fine, if perhaps slightly underwhelming. Running at mostly ultra settings on my PC, the preview build looked alright, but there were no real standouts visually. These matches were tense and every fraction of a second counted, which was incredibly fun. Across three different Escort maps, there were different lanes, vantage points that are perfect for snipers, and different ways of flanking to get the drop on whoever currently controls the robot. With a couple of exceptions, they feel a bit too hectic, and it's easy for a team carefully using certain ultimate abilities (like the aforementioned flamethrower) to gain the advantage to a ludicrously lopsided effect.Įscort definitely feels like the best game mode right now, and a large part of that is down to the map design, which properly funnels enemy teams into each other. While Ubisoft plans for there to be 14 maps available at the game's launch, some of the maps I played on just don't feel fun when combined with the available game modes. Unfortunately, things are a bit uneven right now. Range of modes, but more work neededĮscort is the strongest mode so far. Other modes like Domination and Occupy involve holding certain sections on the map to score points. Escort tasks one team with bringing a robot from one side of the map to the next, while the other team tries to stop them. While the preview I played was solely on Windows PC, the full game will support cross-play across PC and consoles, meaning players can play together no matter what systems they opt to use. Time to kill never felt too unfair, and while XDefiant is definitely closer to something like a Call of Duty game than it is to Overwatch 2, the time to kill and wide mixture of abilities mean it's not all down to having the fastest reflexes, but also rewards clever plays and more strategic combat.ĭifferent factions play off of each other well - special mention must go to the Libertad characters, who can heal themselves and allies - so I imagine there'll be a lot of fun in playing together with a dedicated team, mixing and matching different combinations to find the best balance. With only two hours of matches under my belt so far, it's hard to gauge certain things, but overall the gunplay feels fine. Once you're in a match, the action is frenetic. Earning enough points will give you a brief use of special goggles, marking enemies no matter where they are on the map.īy contrast, playing as a member of the Cleaners will allow you to use a flame drone to strafe enemies while unlocking an ultimate flamethrower can burn out an area with ease. Regardless of faction, you can choose from one of five classes, each geared around a particular primary weapon such as an assault rifle or shotgun. As an example, if you're playing as Echelon, you can regularly activate a stealth suit to go practically invisible. At the start of a match, you pick from one of five factions pulled in from other Ubisoft franchises: Cleaners of The Division, DedSec from Watch Dogs, Echelon of Splinter Cell, Libertad from Far Cry 6, and the Phantoms of Ghost Recon.Įach faction has access to the same classes, but with different special abilities and one of two unique ultimate abilities to choose from. I've played lots of shooters, some more complex than others, but there isn't a heavy learning curve to XDefiant. That definitely feels like an accurate summary from my hands-on experience. ![]() Granny Smith refers to her parents and siblings as "the Smith family" in Family Appreciation Day. The pressure you place on yourself will diminish significantly. Work will seem easier in the sense that you don't need it nearly as much you can now survive without working. Once you achieve that goal you'll probably find that your mental attitude changes significantly. I think the main thing you'll want to focus on now is accumulating enough assets to enable you to live even a meager lifestyle without working. We found this to be critical in coming up with a number that was "enough". How do you account for major dental expenses? And so on. You also need to know, for example, how to convert the costs of large appliances (washers, dryers, refrigerators, etc.) to a monthly expense. You need to focus not only on what you actually spend annually, but also factor in many "what if" scenarios. It is very important to have a very good grasp of your expenses. We have found that it is critical (for us) to live somewhere that has plenty to do AND natural beauty. The ACA promises to be a great thing for early retirees if it survives without being ruined by repeated amendments. But this will vary tremendously from person-to-person. This includes premiums and out-of-pocket. IOW, a very good plan that I was able to keep after retiring. My costs have been roughly $15,000 per year (family plan) with hard limits on any out-of-pocket beyond that. So I'd suggest avoiding any plan based on a very meager existence. A very meager lifestyle of backpacking and freight-train-hopping might work for someone in their 30s, but you will eventually get old. If you own your home free and clear, you can live quite comfortably today on roughly $50,000 per year (give or take) in the mid-west.
